Digital Casebook - Development of a learning portal for students based on TYPO3.

Requirements

The learning portal in the form of a "digital casebook" should enable students to work independently on sample legal cases. Lecturers at the university should be able to upload cases to accompany their courses and provide them with extensive accompanying materials. Students should be able to log in and then carry out the step-by-step solution of legal cases in expert opinion style. Comprehensive rights and role management would be required.

Realization

atlantis dx realized the digital casebook on the basis of the TYPO3 content management system. Among other things, TYPO3 contains a finely adjustable rights system in which the various authorizations can be set in an uncomplicated yet very detailed manner.

The front end - for students

Once students have been assigned to a course by their lecturer, they can log in to the digital casebook using their email and password. A dashboard shows which cases they can work on, what they have already worked on and for which cases there may be new information or changes.

The case solution initially only shows the facts of the case. The solution consists of individual sub-steps, each of which has a preliminary question (e.g.: "What do you need to check next? Think of ..."). By clicking on it, the student receives the answer that leads him to the next question. In this way, they gradually and interactively approach the solution to the case. By clicking, the student can call up suitable legal texts, helpful explanations, instructional videos and a quiz. They also have the option of displaying the entire solution without preliminary questions at any time.

The backend - for lecturers

In the backend, lecturers provide suitable cases for their respective courses, which they can provide with helpful legal texts and explanations. First, they enter the facts to be worked on. This is followed by the creation of a step-by-step solution, which is structured hierarchically.

Which student groups get to see which cases is linked to the respective course. The lecturer publishes the case and can add to or change it at any time.

The digital casebook has been very well received by students at the university. It is a particularly helpful tool when preparing for exams, as these can involve similar cases. The Digital Casebook scores highly with its intuitive usability. As the student clicks through a guided solution step by step, the solution is not simply consumed by passive reading, but is worked out independently and actively using the law. The questions asked help the user to grasp the facts and to read and analyze the law carefully. In addition, there are hints at crucial and difficult points to provide food for thought. Linked legal texts can be read without effort, as can the additional materials embedded for repetition and consolidation. Extensions are planned, such as the storage of scripts that can be navigated through using an outline and the option of marking text passages or adding your own notes.
