TYPO3 SEO offers specially adapted measures for professional optimization. In the following, we will reveal which of these are suitable for your company and offer you a decisive advantage over the competition.

Why SEO is indispensable

Do you want to stand out from your strong competitors? You need to display the best possible content on Google in order to land on page 1. Google's aim is to display only the best content for users. Write in-depth content that plays an important role on your site (so-called cornerstone content), as this offers added value for your website.

From a technical point of view, the following features play a role in good performance:

  • Lean page structure
  • Check Robots.txt
  • Optimized URL structure (speaking URLS)
  • Use structured data
  • Canonical URLs
  • Pagespeed verbessern
  • Mobil-First im Fokus
  • Valider Quellcode
  • Meta-Tags (Title und Description)

On the content side, the focus is on topic clusters and the associated keyword optimization so that the desired texts and landing pages rank well on Google. After a certain amount of time, the Google algorithm recognizes whether a page is relevant for a topic or not. Over time, texts are given more and more weight, as the author's expert status is now recognized by Google. The Knowledge Graph and Google's Hummingbird update also changed the ranking algorithm to semantic search. The Knowledge Graph is a semantic database that helps Google to decipher the relationship between different entities. This means that questions containing the keyword can also be answered.

11 TYPO3 SEO Basics

With TYPO3, it has always been possible to make SEO adjustments. In the past, however, users needed a lot of additional extensions to do this. Since version 9, you can make all SEO adjustments in the CMS without extensions - the 12th version is already in the starting blocks. However, it is still advisable to install certain extensions in order to cover the full range of functions with TYPO3 in the SEO area. Do you still have questions? We will be happy to help you!

Since the ninth version of TYPO3, a wide range of SEO settings is already available. However, it is important to integrate these into the existing extensions, otherwise the settings will not be adopted. Are you looking for more SEO extensions for TYPO3? You can find many free extensions on platforms such as TYPO3 Extension Repository (TER).

Below we present the integrated SEO functions of TYPO3 in detail:

1. meta data

Meta data offers great potential for the search engine. The 'Meta title' describes the overarching topic of your website or a text. You can edit the title under 'Page properties' - 'SEO'. It is important that it does not contain more than 70 characters. Special characters and the most important keywords are also welcome here.

The meta description is the short text that can be seen under a heading in Google. It should be between 140 and 160 characters long and contain all main and secondary keywords.

In TYPO3, this setting is sometimes somewhat hidden and not very intuitive for newcomers. We will be happy to help you make the SEO settings professionally.

2. canonicals

Canonicals are tags that help you to mark duplicate content. Is the content of a main page repeated on your subpage? Add a canonical tag to the original page so that the page with the original content is indexed. Attention: Google regularly crawls existing websites and recognizes pages with duplicate content. A canonical URL is the page that Google considers most relevant if there is duplicate content.

3. explanatory or speaking links

Another important factor for staying technically on the right track with SEO is to avoid cryptic URLs and rely on explanatory URLs. It should be clear to the website visitor what the page is about, as they are used for navigation and hierarchical classification of a website. This increases user-friendliness, as visitors remember the website better and the search engine also recognizes a stringent structure and associated keywords.

Since version 9 of TYPO3, it is easier than ever to generate URLs yourself. In previous versions, this was only possible using extensions such as realurl or cooluri.

4. sitemap.xml

The sitemap is a file that contains all pages and subpages of a website, their content and relationships. It is used to transmit the structure and layout to crawlers. This file is read by Google, for example, in order to improve crawling. All important information for indexing the website is passed on. For Sitemap.xml, all TYPO3 versions from the ninth onwards are also a lifesaver here - older versions require an extension (e.g. Sitemap Generator).

5. image optimization

A suitable image or video must be optimized for the search engine in the same way as text content. It is extremely important to use alt and title tags for images and videos. Click on the pencil icon to enter the title, description, alt tag, caption, download name and the relevant keyword. However, entering the keywords is optional here, as keywords for images are not available as an option in many other CMS systems.

6. social media (OpenGraph)

In the page properties, you can store OpenGraph data for your social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram and Facebook under 'Social Media'. This allows you to optimize and share snippets. Upload a suitable image, because if you don't, the social media platform itself will decide which image is displayed. We recommend that you fill in your own metadata for Twitter and the like.

7. hreflang

If you want to be successful in search engine optimization, you need to use Hreflang tags for international websites. With Hreflang you can tell Google which language version should rank in which country. In newer versions of TYPO3, Hreflang tags are automatically added to multilingual websites.

8. fast loading times

The loading times of a website have a major influence on the ranking. Therefore, make sure that your site loads quickly. If it takes too long for the page to open, some visitors will leave again. Two seconds is a good reference value. Does your site take too long? Start by compressing images or other files (for example with the GZIP or scriptmerger extension).

9. structured data

Structured data is an absolute must for TYPO3 SEO. This is how you communicate important information to the search engine so that your snippet stands out in the search engine. Whether breadcrumbs, ratings, company information or FAQs - structured data is important in many places.

10. heading labeling

Structure your content so that visitors find a clearly structured page <h1>. This should only appear once per text and landing page. Also use headings from h2 to h6, depending on what suits your content.

11. URL redirects

Have you or one of your editors deleted existing content? Make sure you set up a redirect. If a website visitor clicks on the outdated link, they will not be left there with an error message, but will be sent to a relevant article or your landing page, for example.

On the one hand, the meta data can be added to TYPO3, on the other hand the URL name, canonical tags, sitemap, OpenGraph information and much more.
